Major fall in stroke deaths down to GPs

Better preventive care from GPs is a major factor behind dramatic reductions in stroke rates and stroke deaths in Australia, a report says.

Rates of stroke fell by 25% between 1997 and 2009 and stroke death rates fell by 70%, a report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has shown.

The reductions were in part due to improvements in preventive care in the community such as smoking cessation strategies and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors,
