MBS listing of HbA1c test on the cards

In April, the Medical Services Advisory Committee recommended the HbA1c blood test be funded for diagnosis of diabetes as endorsed by the World Health Organization in 2011.

The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) with the support of the Australian Diabetes Society requested the test receive government funding in 2012.

Pathologist Dr Graham Jones of the RCPA said that, if approved, the test would help in reducing the proportion of people with type 2 diabetes who are unaware that they have the disease.
