Medicare imaging rebates not covering costs

RADIOLOGISTS have called on the Commonwealth Government to abandon the 12-year freeze on Medicare rebates for imaging, warning patient safety and wellbeing are at risk.

Ahead of next month’s Budget, the Australian Diagnostic Imaging Association (ADIA), which represents private radiologists, called for patient rebates to be indexed annually.

The survey of more than 600 practices across Australia found 94% would need to increase charges to cover the widening gap between their costs and current patient rebates.
