The beyondblue survey of more than 14,000 doctors and medical students — a world first — found one in five medical students and one in 10 doctors had suicidal thoughts in the past year, compared to one in 45 in the general community.

It also found younger doctors were most at risk of mental illness, with those under 30 working the longest hours, almost 50 hours per week compared to the average of 43.6 hours, and 9.2% of students reporting “high levels of psychological distress” compared to 2.6%
