Minister wants GPs to prescribe local cannabis

GPs may soon be able to prescribe Australian-grown medicinal cannabis to patients through the TGA's Special Access Scheme under a Federal Government proposal.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, Health Minister Sussan Ley said that the government planned to legalise Australian-farmed cannabis so that high-quality products could be manufactured onshore and supplied to patients through the TGA.

The proposed amendment to the Narcotic Drugs Act would provide the "missing link from farm to pharmacy" and would be introduced to the parliament by the end of the year, she said.
