Misuse of newer anticoagulants revealed

Novel anticoagulants are being used inappropriately by hospital doctors to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation patients who have risk factors for bleeding, a Victorian study has found.

Case reports of bleeding episodes in four patients show that bleeding risk assessment should be given the same priority as stroke risk assessment before initiating novel anticoagulants, say doctors from a Victorian hospital.

They made their recommendation after finding that the new
