More murder charges for nurse over nursing home blaze

Roger Dean, 35, of Quakers Hill, is now charged with eight counts of murder over the fire, which caused the deaths of nine elderly residents.

The registered nurse didn't appear in Sydney's Central Local Court on Thursday, but his lawyers were there when Magistrate John Favretto set down 16 February for his next court appearance.

Dean has been in custody since he appeared via video link at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday. He did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused.

The four additional counts were laid on Thursday.

Two fires are believed to have broken out in separate wings of the nursing home in Sydney's northwest in the early hours of last Friday morning.

Three residents, including 73-year-old Alma Smith, died at the scene.

The other identified victims are Neeltje Valkay, 90, Doris Mercy Becke, 96, Caesar Galea, 82, Urbana Alipio, 79, Lola Bennett, 86, and Ella Wood, 97.
