Most needy miss out on bariatric surgery

Obesity surgery remains out of reach for many of the Australians who need it most, research suggests.

A NSW study published this week found “substantial” inequality of access to bariatric procedures, with the highest earners five times more likely to have surgery than the lowest.

Even after adjusting for private health insurance, high earners still underwent surgery at twice the rate of the most disadvantaged, the Medical Journal of Australia study
