Move fast to get $6000 video grants

GPs considering whether they should equip themselves for video consultations have been urged to act fast to make the most of the $6000 available in incentives from the government for each practitioner who makes an initial claim.

Almost 1800 claims were made in the first two months after Medicare item numbers became available for video consultations, with ACRRM president Dr Jeff Ayton saying eligible rural, regional and outer-metropolitan doctors were forging partnerships with specialists to make the most of the new technology.

Telehealth advisory group RACGP representative Dr Sue Page-Mitchell said the $6000 “on board” incentive was only available until 30 June next year and would be gradually reduced over the following three years.

“It’s quite deliberate to get GPs to put their toe in the water,” Dr Page-Mitchell said.
