Move for OTC cholera vax rejected

A move by pharmacists to supply the cholera vaccine as an over-the-counter medicine has been knocked back by regulators who say it’s a safety risk.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, as part of a push to allow pharmacists to administer both low-risk oral and injectable vaccinations, proposed rescheduling the cholera vaccine from a schedule-four medication to schedule-three, making it “pharmacy only”.

In its submission to the Therapeutic Goods Administration earlier this year, the guild referred to studies of travellers to cholera-endemic regions
