Naloxone finally goes OTC

Addiction specialists have welcomed a move to reschedule the opioid antidote naloxone as an over-the-counter product, but have questioned whether patients will receive appropriate counselling on its use from pharmacists.

The TGA's Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling (ACMS) has recommended that single-use prefilled syringe preparations of naloxone be changed from prescription only to OTC from 1 February 2016.
