‘Nano sunscreen like asbestos’: Greens MP criticised

Dr Kaye made the comments in support of a Friends of the Earth campaign to restrict the use of nanoparticles, which he said were “similar in size and structure to asbestos particles”, “easily… absorbed through the skin” and “potentially extremely harmful”.

About 20 Friends of the Earth members protested outside Health Minister Tanya Plibersek’s office this morning dressed as “beach safety icon” and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff to draw attention to their campaign, which calls for mandatory labelling of all products that use nanoparticles.

Cancer Council Australia’s Public Health Committee chair, Craig Sinclair, said Dr Kaye’s comments were “a real concern”.

“There is a major difference between what we know about asbestos and what we know about nanoparticles,” he said.
