Narcotics crackdown: 50 doctors targeted

MEDICARE Australia will investigate 50 doctors over the next three months for inappropriate prescribing of narcotics as part of a nationwide crackdown.

In announcing the investigations yesterday, Human Services Minister Tanya Plibersek said the doctors involved had been found to have prescribed “unusually high levels” of narcotics – including OxyContin and OxyNorm - to patients under the age of 50.
