NDIS rollout should reduce negligence lawsuits

Access to support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is likely to reduce the number of patients who resort to suing their doctor over adverse outcomes from treatment.

The NDIS operates as a no-fault compensation scheme by funding medical and rehabilitation services and equipment for people with disabilities and illness.

Aggrieved patients may choose not to sue their doctor if they are able to have their care and support fully funded by the scheme, says Dr Sara Bird, medico-legal advisory manager at MDA
