New advice on blood lead levels

The NHMRC has reduced the threshold blood level of lead that should be considered a red flag for excessive exposure.

In a position statement issued Tuesday, the council recommends that strategies should be implemented to reduce lead exposure in anyone with a blood lead level greater than 5µg/dL.

"The source of exposure should be investigated and reduced, particularly if the person is a child or pregnant woman," the statement advises.
