The switch to HPV-based cervical screening in December will reduce a woman’s lifetime risk of cervical surgery compared with the current Pap test program, cancer researchers say.

When the new cervical screening program comes into place, women vaccinated against HPV will be at a 13% lower risk of cervical surgery over their lifetime compared with if Pap smear screening was maintained, according to Professor Karen Canfell, director of research at Cancer Council NSW.
