New detection criteria for kids' melanoma

The ABCD criteria used for detection of melanoma in adults are not appropriate for children, say dermatologists, who are proposing new criteria to improve early detection in paediatric settings.

A review of 60 US children with melanoma found most did not present with the typical ABCD features seen in adults.

Instead, they were characterised by amelanosis, bleeding, symmetry, being nodular, having regular borders and uniform colour and being variable in diameter.
