New diabetes strategy

At the opening of the 2013 World Diabetes Congress in Melbourne yesterday, Mr Dutton said an expert advisory group would develop a strategy to inform how existing health spending can better address diabetes care and management.

The group will be co-chaired by the founder of the International Diabetes Institute, Professor Paul Zimmet, and West Australian MP Judi Moylan, founder of the Parliamentary Diabetes Support Group.

"More than 4% of the population have a diagnosed diabetes condition, and a further 1% have diabetes and don't know it," said Mr Dutton, acknowledging the role of shared risk factors such as obesity with other chronic diseases.

“It is important that doctors and other health professionals are supported by a system that enables them to provide patients with best practice treatment and management of diseases like diabetes.”
