New five-day emergency contraceptive pill launched

The new emergency contraception pill, ulipristal, which works up to five days after unprotected sex, is now available on prescription in Australia

Known as EllaOne, the emergency contraceptive is being marketed by MS Health, part of Marie Stopes International, and is a single pill containing 30mg ulipristal acetate, a selective progesterone receptor modulator.

Ulipristal is recommended to be taken as soon as possible but no later than 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
