New guidelines for low bone density and osteoporosis
New guidelines have been released for the treatment of low bone density and osteoporosis to prevent fractures in men and women.
These are some highlights from the latest recommendations by the American College of Physicians:
- Treating women who have known osteoporosis with alendronate, risedronate, zoledronic acid, or denosumab to reduce the risk for hip and vertebral fractures.
- Treatment should last five years.
- Menopausal hormone therapy should not be prescribed to treat osteoporosis in women.
