New stool test to unlock gut health

It uses DNA sequencing technology

An innovative new stool test that unlocks the DNA of a person's gut bacteria has been launched in Queensland.

Microba is the first Australian company to offer gut bacteria DNA sequencing technology direct to consumers under a venture with the University of Queensland.

While not medically diagnostic, the stool test kits can give consumers an understanding of the species of bacteria and micro-organisms living in their gut and how they could be affecting their health.

Supplying a sample is a similar process to what is required for FOBT.

The technology has been designed off the back of growing research that suggests gut bacteria can influence gut health, wellbeing and even mental health.

University of Queensland immunologist Professor Ian Frazer says the test will most likely be used by people who are curious about the state of their gut.
