New thoughts on poor healing of foot ulcers

Scurvy may be an overlooked cause of poorly healing foot ulcers in people with diabetes, Australian endocrinologists say.

Vitamin C deficiency was surprisingly common among patients attending a diabetes clinic who had delayed healing lower limb ulcers and a poor diet, diabetes specialists at Westmead Hospital in Sydney found.

In a review of 11 patients who underwent vitamin C testing because of poor diet the researchers found that seven were vitamin C deficient, with average levels of 19umol/L.
