Nitschke to face AHPRA for possible barbiturate breach

The South Australian woman, who was in the final stages of motor neurone disease, used a supply of prescription medication she obtained illegally to end her life but specifically stated in a letter written before her death she was not assisted to do so by Dr Nitschke or anyone else.

Dr Nitschke was unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation but Exit International spokesperson Dr Fiona Stewart confirmed he was being investigated for a possible breach of the TGA’s special access scheme.

A TGA spokesperson said the authority had referred Dr Nitschke’s attempted importation of Nembutal (pentobarbital) to AHPRA for investigation on the grounds he may have breached a requirement to prescribe the drug in accordance with good medical practice.

An AHPRA spokesperson said the Medical Board of Australia was not able to comment on current investigations or confirm whether an investigation was underway.
