Nitschke running euthanasia workshop

The first of the workshops, held recently in Brisbane and attended by around 70 people, came as Dr Nitschke awaited the outcome of an ongoing AHPRA investigation into his attempts to import the banned barbiturate Nembutal for a terminally ill patient who took her own life in December.

The South Australian woman, who was in the final stages of motor neurone disease, used a supply of prescription medication she obtained illegally to end her life, but specifically stated in a letter written before her death she was not assisted to do so by Dr Nitschke or anyone else.

The workshop series was set to continue in Bundaberg before heading to Melbourne. It came as Merin Nielsen was facing trial in Brisbane last week accused of helping elderly friend Frank Ward to kill himself in 2009.

The trial was continuing in the Supreme Court as MO went to press.
