'Not fair', says GP told to repay $520k he overbilled

A rural GP who overbilled Medicare by more than $520,000 in a single year has told a tribunal it’s “not fair” he has to pay the money back because of the hours he put in.

Dr Qing Shan Liu, contended that as a “full-time busy GP” he deserved more than “a little bit over $100,000” for his round-the-clock work in the small NSW country towns of Emmaville and Ashford.

“This punishment or this payback probably is not fair for me,” he told the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. “I worked for the whole year down there. I got paid $110,000.”
