Nothing to fear: GP performance indicators will be ‘voluntary’

College president Professor Claire Jackson confirmed the RACGP would soon release “23 [performance management] indicators varying across the practice and practice management areas”, but the indicators would be purely voluntary and she said no data would be collected by the college or other bodies.

Professor Jackson said some GPs and practices had been “very anxious” about media coverage of the new indicators and it was important to dispel some of the misconceptions.

“The most important thing is [these indicators are] purely voluntary. Nobody has to share the data. The college doesn’t need to see it, the Medicare Local doesn’t need to see it, there’s no big brother agenda,” she said.

“We imagine practices would look at adopting one, or maybe two, of the 23 measures we have developed and use them as they best suit the practice in question.”
