O2 therapy raises risk of amputation

Stubborn diabetic foot ulcers do not benefit from oxygen therapy, and may even be harmed by it, according to a surprising study finding.

The US study of more than 6000 patients found the addition of hyperbaric oxygen treatment to conventional wound care did not increase the likelihood of wound healing.

Nor did oxygen therapy decrease the risk of amputation, in contrast to the findings of several small randomised trials, researchers wrote last week in Diabetes
