Obese kids should not diet, says NHMRC

Obese children should avoid trying to shed kilos — rather they should be advised to maintain and “grow into” their weight, experts say.

New draft primary care guidelines on obesity, released by the NHMRC, recommend that weight-loss strategies be limited to post-pubertal obese adolescents.

Dr Matt Sabin, an endocrinologist who helped develop the guidelines, said weight loss could lead to adverse effects in children, such as delayed puberty.

“That can affect bone health,
