Obesity surgery can trigger alcohol abuse

Weight-loss surgery leaves patients at increased risk of developing alcohol problems, particularly in the second year after a gastric bypass, research finds.

A study of over 2500 adults who underwent bariatric surgery in the US found 9.6% had alcohol use disorders in the second postoperative year.

Just 7.6% of patients had been problem drinkers before surgery, and 7.3% in the first year afterwards.
