Old drug proves promising for chronic alcoholism
Off-label use of the muscle relaxant baclofen holds promise as a new treatment for chronic alcoholism without the need to achieve total abstinence, the GP16 conference has heard.
Emergency medicine specialist Dr Amanda Stafford (pictured) says she’s on a mission to convince GPs to try it on their patients, given what she says is the poor efficacy of other pharmacotherapeutic options.
“This is a new paradigm in treatment because it also treats anxiety. Thoughts about alcohol disappear, and there’s no need to detox or to become abstinent,” says Dr Stafford,
