Old PBS rules discourage risk-based statins

Australian GPs are confined by individual lipid levels to make decisions

Out-of-date PBS criteria are preventing GPs from initiating statins based on absolute risk assessment, researchers say.


According to study findings from the University of Melbourne, Australia lags behind New Zealand, where GPs have been supported by government drug reimbursement rules to prescribe statin therapy based on best-practice guidelines.

While almost all GPs in New Zealand initiate statins based on absolute-risk-based criteria, PBS rules mean their Australian counterparts are still making statin therapy decisions based on individual lipid levels, say health policy researchers
