Oncologist letters leave GPs in the dark

GPs are being let down by oncologist referral letters that fail to provide important prognostic information for cancer patients, according to an Australian study.

Only one in 10 oncologist letters for patients with metastatic cancer contained quantitative estimates of survival times, with prognostic information usually limited to vague descriptions such as "incurable" or "stage IV cancer", an analysis by researchers in NSW found.
