One in five UTIs drug-resistant

Drug-resistant superbugs are cementing their hold in general practice, new figures show, with one in five UTIs now resistant to first-line antibiotics.

A recent survey of community-acquired UTIs across Australia, conducted by the Australian Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, found 21% of Escherichia coli samples were resistant to trimethoprim, 21% resistant to amoxycillin-clavulanate, and 15% resistant to cephazolin.
