Openness the key to success
FOR Victorian GP Dr Tom Alwyn, the secret to being a great registrar supervisor is simple: "Be available."
"Treat [registrars] as colleagues, not students, make them feel free to ask no matter what question it is, [no matter] what time they ask," he explained. "No-one knows everything."
With this attitude, Dr Alwyn should not be surprised to find himself a finalist in the MO/GPET Supervisor of the Year Award.
It's not just registrars who have benefited from his open-door approach.
Dr Alwyn said challenging or unusual questions from junior doctors helped improve his own medical knowledge.
