OTC codeine of little benefit concludes review

A TGA review has found little evidence to support the efficacy of OTC codeine combinations over single-ingredient analgesics such as NSAIDs.

The independent review, commissioned to inform an imminent rescheduling decision for codeine, also found that OTC products are associated with life-threatening adverse effects such as renal impairment gastric bleeding and hypokalaemia.
