Outsourced TGA reviews spark safety fears

Doctors say there could be a repeat of the PIP implant disaster if the TGA outsources safety assessments of medical devices to the private sector.

The Federal Government wants to give the TGA sweeping new powers to help fast-track medical devices and other medications for clinical use.

One option outlined in a bill before Parliament is for Australian companies to carry out conformity assessments on medical devices waiting to be approved by the TGA.

But a Senate inquiry was told that there is too little detail on how these companies would be monitored.
