Overhaul of breast screen advice on way

Breast screening advice for Australian women will be overhauled this year, as overseas programs come under fire for providing biased mammography information.

A Department of Health and Ageing spokeswoman told Australian Doctor its statutory agency Cancer Australia was poised to take over consumer information for screening programs from state and territory BreastScreen services.

“This resource will include information about the benefits, risks and limitations of breast cancer screening to support informed participation,” the spokeswoman said.
