Painkiller ban cuts overdose deaths

A UK study has again put the spotlight on the mortality risks associated with overdosing on painkillers containing dextropropoxyphene - which are still available in Australia.

The research carried out in England and Wales shows that the withdrawal of the drug has been a "success story", resulting in a major reduction in suicidal deaths involving the drug, and no significant increase in deaths involving other analgesics.
