Palliative care needs a rethink: experts

News that the UK has recently rejected its widely used end-of-life care pathway raises concerns for palliative care in Australia, an expert says.

The Liverpool care pathway (LCP) was dismissed by the UK after it was linked with legal, ethical, safety and clinical practice difficulties, along with poor diagnosis of dying in clinical care.

But as end-of-life care pathways (ELOCPs) in Australia are based on this model there was an urgent need to examine current palliative guidelines, says Dr Raymond Chan, a cancer researcher at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a perspective piece in this
