Paracetamol ineffective for back pain

The place of paracetamol as first-line recommended drug for lower back pain should be reviewed because it has proved to be no better than placebo in a randomised controlled trial, Australian researchers say.

The analgesic was no better than placebo at speeding up recovery, or easing pain levels or acute episodes of lower back pain, according to the first major trial to investigate the effectiveness of paracetamol for the common complaint, published in the Lancet.
