Patel charges dropped

Prosecutor Peter Davis told the Brisbane District Court today that the Crown would not be pursuing criminal medical negligence charges against Patel after deciding it was not in the interests of justice.

"The Crown has decided that it's not in the interest of justice in all the circumstances to further prosecute the medical negligence counts," Mr Davis told the court.

Patel pleaded guilty to four charges of fraud relating to his registration as a medical practitioner and employment at Bundaberg Base Hospital.

He had been facing two charges of manslaughter, two of grievous bodily harm, an alternative charge of negligent acts causing harm, seven counts of fraud and one of attempted fraud.

Mr Davis said Patel’s plea of guilty to four counts of fraud “appropriately reflects” Patel’s criminality in relation to the fraud allegation and the Crown wouldn’t be pursuing the remaining fraud charges.
