Pathologists raise red flag on 10 tests

Australian pathologists have listed 10 tests they believe doctors should refrain from ordering.

These have been released in a set of suggested guidelines aimed at ending what the Royal College of Pathologists describes as the “current inappropriate requesting trends”.

They urge doctors not to perform futile tests on people who are unlikely to benefit from the results or treatment. Another pitfall is expensive wide-ranging allergy tests instead of those specific to a patient’s condition.
