Patient demand puts flu vax supplies under pressure

'Unprecedented' need means some people have to wait

GP practices may struggle to keep up stocks of flu vaccine with extra demand from patients affecting availability, health authorities say.

The TGA has already released 9.6 million vaccines this year — including newly-funded trivalent vaccines for over-65s — compared with 8.3 million vaccines across the whole of last year.

“Unprecedented demand for seasonal influenza vaccination this year has impacted the availability of supplies,” acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Hobbs said in a statement.
