Patient refused access to specialist by Qld hospital

THE refusal by a public hospital in Queensland to give a patient access to specialist care raises concerns of a ‘no money, no care’ situation for patients, doctors say.

The warning comes after an unnamed public hospital on the Gold Coast refused to put a patient on a waiting list to see a specialist despite the patient’s GP writing a referral saying he required specialist care in the public system.

Dr Gino Pecoraro, president of AMA Queensland, said the case involved a Category 2 patient, who, according to the treatment guidelines, should have been seen within 90 days.
