Patients lack knowledge about heart attack symptoms

Most people don’t realise they are experiencing an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and more than two-thirds fail to call an ambulance, according to Canberra-based research.

The study, which surveyed 100 patients admitted to Canberra Hospital with AMI, found only 26% of patients recognised they had had a heart attack.

Researchers including cardiologist Dr Ahmad Farshid write many patients didn’t have the expected symptoms when experiencing an AMI.
