PBS price cuts still not enough, doctors say

A government review has recommended price reductions, which will come into effect by 1 April next year, for 171 strengths of 63 different drugs.

Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said the reductions were good news for patients.

“The price disclosure initiative is part of the 2010 Further PBS Reforms negotiated as part of the Memorandum of Understanding with Medicines Australia,” she said.

“Working collaboratively with industry, we have been able to find savings of $1.9 billion.

“These savings and policy reforms are the perfect example of the benefits that can be delivered when industry and government work together to address a problem.”

But Doctors Reform Society president Dr Tracy Schrader said patients would continue to pay up to four times more than in other countries for many life-saving drugs.
