Pharmacy effective in cardio and diabetes screening

Community pharmacies are effective locations for regular screening for diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk factors, however, high drop out rates among those referred for follow-up care are a concern, researchers have concluded.

A UK research team reviewed 16 studies, including a total of 108,414 screened participants, and found the pharmacy screening successfully identified “a significant number” of previously unknown cases of cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes.

Overall, less than half of the
