A $20 million trial that puts pharmacists in charge of managing chronic pain — despite just three or four hours of online training — will put patients at risk, pain specialists warn.

More than 1600 pharmacies have signed up to the Chronic Pain Meds Check trial, which started this week despite widespread condemnation from GPs.

Pharmacists are expected to review medication regimens and create 'action plans' for patients who have experienced chronic pain for at least three months and have signs of either self-management problems or drug dependency.
