Pharmacy skin cancer checks ‘irresponsible’: AMA

Pharmacists checking patients for skin cancer is “irresponsible and inappropriate”, according to a senior figure in the Australian Medical Association.

While his comments have been labelled as "ill-informed" by pharmacy leaders, Dr Saxon Smith, president of the NSW AMA branch, was critical of in-pharmacy cancer checks, saying some of the deadliest types of melanoma were difficult to diagnose.

A full-body skin check in a doctor’s surgery was more appropriate than “in the aisles between the toilet paper and the toothpaste,” Dr Smith
