Phone follow-up enough for otitis media: study

Children with acute otitis media can be safely followed up with just a phone call, results from a Finnish trial suggest.

A study of 158 children aged under three with acute otitis media found a low rate of complications when they were managed without antibiotics, as long as they showed signs of improvement after the initial GP consultation.

Of the 104 children with symptomatic improvement over 48-72 hours, fewer than 3% experienced worsening symptoms or perforation of the eardrum a week later.

This compared with 30% among the 54 who experienced worsening symptoms up to 72 hours after initial
